Art

The Art program is a creative and inspiring part of the Specials rotation, providing all scholars with a 55-minute class once per week. This program offers students a hands-on opportunity to explore a variety of artistic techniques, materials, and styles while expressing themselves in a safe and encouraging environment.

Through drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and mixed media, scholars learn foundational art skills and key concepts such as color theory, shape, texture, balance, and form. Lessons are aligned with state and national art standards and often integrate cross-curricular themes from literacy, science, history, and social-emotional learning.

The program celebrates student voice and choice, encouraging individuality and imagination. In each class, students practice perseverance, focus, and self-reflection while gaining an appreciation for art history and the creative contributions of diverse cultures and artists around the world.

 

Music

The Music program is a joyful and enriching part of the Specials rotation, offering all scholars a 55-minute class once per week. This program nurtures creativity, expression, and a deep appreciation for music through singing, movement, instrument exploration, and performance.

Aligned with national and state music education standards, the curriculum introduces scholars to rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, and musical form in a way that is developmentally appropriate and engaging. Students learn to read and write basic music notation, explore diverse musical genres and cultures, and build foundational skills in vocal and instrumental performance.

Collaboration and self-expression are key components of each lesson. Whether students are playing percussion instruments, composing simple rhythms, or singing together as a class, they are developing focus, listening skills, and confidence.

BME's Physical Education (P.E.) program is a vital component of the Specials rotation, providing all scholars with a 55-minute class once per week. This dynamic and inclusive program supports the development of physical skills, teamwork, self-discipline, and overall wellness in a fun and engaging environment.

Through a variety of age-appropriate activities—including team sports, cooperative games, fitness challenges, and movement exercises—scholars strengthen their motor skills, coordination, and physical endurance. The program emphasizes the importance of lifelong physical activity and empowers students to make healthy choices that benefit their bodies and minds.

Character education is also woven throughout P.E. lessons, as students practice sportsmanship, respect, perseverance, and responsibility. Each class fosters a safe space for all students to take risks, learn from mistakes, and grow stronger physically and socially.

Enrichment

The Enrichment class is a unique and impactful part of the Specials rotation, providing all scholars with a 55-minute session once per week. This program is designed to support individualized and differentiated learning, allowing students to engage in academic experiences tailored to their specific strengths, needs, and areas for growth.

Using data-driven instruction and flexible grouping, the Enrichment class offers a wide range of activities that deepen understanding and challenge students at their own level. Scholars may work on advanced problem-solving, creative thinking tasks, project-based learning, or targeted skill-building in core content areas such as math, reading, and writing.

The program nurtures a growth mindset by encouraging students to take ownership of their learning, set goals, and reflect on their progress. It also promotes collaboration and critical thinking, helping scholars stretch beyond grade-level expectations in a supportive and stimulating environment.

Library

BME's school library program is a vibrant and enriching part of the Specials rotation, offering all scholars a dedicated 55-minute class once per week. This program fosters a love for reading, supports literacy development, and empowers students with essential research and information literacy skills.

Through interactive read-alouds, book exploration, and engaging activities aligned with grade-level standards, scholars build vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. 

The program is inclusive and engaging for all learners, offering access to a wide variety of books that reflect diverse cultures, experiences, and interests. Scholars are encouraged to become lifelong readers and curious learners, with opportunities to participate in reading challenges, author visits, and library-based projects that promote creativity and collaboration.
